What Does Stress and Overwhelm Feel Like?
Stress and overwhelm can show up in different ways. Sometimes it feels constant and hard to switch off. Other times it builds gradually, until things that once felt manageable begin to feel like too much.
For some people, it’s a mind that won’t slow down, moving from one task or worry to the next without a break. For others, it’s a sense of pressure, as though there is always something that needs attention, or a feeling of being stretched too thin. Stress can also affect you physically, with tension in the body, headaches, difficulty sleeping or a sense of restlessness that doesn’t settle.
You might notice it becoming harder to focus, make decisions or feel present in what you’re doing. There can be a sense of constantly trying to keep up, without feeling like you ever quite get there.
If any of this feels familiar, you’re not alone. And you don’t have to carry it on your own either.
How Counselling Can Help with Stress and Overwhelm
I offer counselling for stress and overwhelm in Brighton, working in a way that is collaborative and responsive to you. There are no quick fixes or rigid approaches. Instead, counselling offers a space to slow things down, talk things through and begin to understand what is contributing to how you are feeling.
Stress can sometimes feel like a constant part of life. But together, we can begin to look at what sits beneath it. The pressures, expectations or patterns that may be building over time. As this becomes clearer, it can create space to respond differently, rather than feeling caught in the same cycle.
Counselling can help you:
Notice patterns that may be contributing to stress or overwhelm
Understand what is driving the pressure you are feeling
Find ways of responding that feel more manageable
Create space for yourself, rather than constantly reacting to demands
There isn’t a single way this work needs to look. This is about your experience. Whether you want to better manage stress day-to-day, understand what is behind it, or simply have somewhere you don’t feel under pressure.

Common questions
What is the difference between stress and feeling overwhelmed?
Stress often builds around specific pressures, such as work or responsibilities. Feeling overwhelmed can be more of a sense that everything is too much at once. Counselling can help you explore both and understand what’s contributing to how you’re feeling.
Why do I feel overwhelmed even when nothing major has happened?
Overwhelm isn’t always linked to one clear event. It can build gradually over time, especially when there hasn’t been space to slow down or process things. Counselling offers a space to reflect on what may be sitting underneath it.
Can counselling help me manage stress better?
Yes. Counselling can help you understand what is driving your stress and how you are responding to it. From there, it becomes easier to find ways of approaching things that feel more manageable.
What if I feel like I’m constantly under pressure?
Living with ongoing pressure can become exhausting. Counselling offers a space to step out of that and look at what’s going on, helping you find a way of responding that feels more sustainable.
