COUNSELLING IN BRIGHTON AND HOVE

Working with grief and bereavement

Bereavement Counselling in Brighton

Grief can be difficult to put into words. It isn’t always just sadness. At times it can feel like a heaviness, a sense of disbelief or a quiet absence that’s hard to explain. You might find yourself going over memories, feeling unsettled or unsure how to carry on in the same way as before. Counselling offers a space to talk things through and make sense of what you’re experiencing, at your own pace.

I offer bereavement counselling in Brighton & Hove, providing a calm, non-judgemental space where you can speak openly about your experience of loss, with someone who will listen carefully.

Alongside in-person sessions at my Brighton practice, I also offer online counselling, so support is available wherever you are.

What Does Grief Feel Like?

Grief can show up in many different ways, and it often isn’t what people expect. Sometimes it’s intense and impossible to ignore. Other times it can feel more subtle, a sense of absence or something missing that’s hard to put into words.

For some people, grief comes in waves. Moments of sadness, longing or disbelief that arrive unexpectedly. For others, it can feel more like numbness or a distance from things that once felt familiar. You might find yourself going over memories, thinking about what has happened or feeling unsettled in ways that are difficult to explain.

Grief can also affect you physically. You may notice changes in sleep, appetite, energy or concentration. At times, even everyday tasks can feel more demanding than they used to.

You might find yourself withdrawing from others, or feeling disconnected from the world around you. Or you may continue as normal on the outside, while something feels very different underneath.

If any of this feels familiar, you’re not alone. And you don’t have to go through it on your own either.

How Counselling Can Help with Grief and Bereavement

I offer bereavement counselling in Brighton, working in a way that is collaborative and responsive to you. There are no expectations about how you should be feeling or how quickly things should change.

Counselling offers a space to talk openly about your experience of loss, without pressure to move on or make sense of it too quickly. We can take things at your pace, allowing whatever you are feeling to be heard and understood.

Grief does not follow a clear path. At times it may feel confusing, or like it shifts from one moment to the next. Counselling can help you stay with what is there, rather than feeling like you have to push it away or manage it on your own.

Counselling can help you:

Talk through your experience of loss in a way that feels manageable

Make sense of the thoughts and feelings that come and go

Stay connected to your own experience without feeling overwhelmed by it

Find a way of carrying your loss that feels possible for you

There isn’t a single way to experience grief. This is about giving you space to be with it, in a way that feels right for you.

In-Person Bereavement Counselling in Brighton & Online Sessions

I offer bereavement counselling in Brighton & Hove, as well as online counselling, so you can choose what feels most comfortable.

In-person sessions provide a space away from everyday life where you can reflect more freely. Online sessions can be helpful if you feel more at ease in familiar surroundings, or if you’re based elsewhere.

Wherever you are, the aim is the same. A calm, supportive space where you can talk openly about your experience.

Taking the First Step

If you’re experiencing grief or bereavement and would like to talk, you’re welcome to get in touch. You don’t need to have a clear way of explaining how you feel. We can begin with whatever feels most present.

Whether you’re in Brighton, Hove or elsewhere, you can arrange an initial session or a free 15-minute call to see whether this feels like the right support for you.

Common questions

Is there a right way to grieve?

No. Grief affects everyone differently, and there isn’t a set way you should feel or respond. Counselling offers a space where your experience can be understood as it is, without judgement or expectation.

What if I feel numb or not as emotional as I expected?

This is more common than people realise. Grief doesn’t always show up as sadness. It can feel like distance, numbness or even confusion. Counselling can help you stay with whatever is there, without needing it to look a certain way.

How can counselling help with grief?

Counselling provides a space to talk things through at your own pace. It can help you make sense of what you’re experiencing and feel less alone in it, rather than trying to move on or find quick answers.

What if the loss happened a long time ago?

Grief doesn’t follow a timeline. Even if the loss was some time ago, it can still be affecting you now. Counselling offers a space to come back to it and understand how it’s been sitting with you.
