COUNSELLING IN BRIGHTON AND HOVE

About me

About me and how I work

I’m John, a counsellor based in Brighton. I offer a calm, supportive space where you can talk things through and make sense of what’s going on.

People come to counselling for different reasons. At times, things can feel overwhelming, unclear or difficult to manage. At other times, there isn’t a clear reason, just a sense that something isn’t quite right.

I trained in Humanistic Counselling at the University of Chichester. This approach focuses on understanding your experience as it is, rather than applying a fixed way of working. In practice, it means I stay responsive to you and what feels most important.

I’ve worked with adults experiencing anxiety, low mood, stress, relationship difficulties, self-esteem issues and a sense of feeling stuck or unsure what to do next. You don’t need to have a clear starting point. We can begin with whatever feels most present for you.

How I work

My approach is centred on you — your pace, your experience and what feels most important.

I don’t offer advice or quick fixes. Instead, we work together to understand what is going on, bringing attention to patterns and feelings that may be shaping your experience. Over time, this can help you make sense of things more clearly and respond in ways that feel more manageable.

The relationship we build is an important part of the work. It’s not about having all the answers, but about creating a space where you feel able to speak openly and hear yourself more clearly.

Whether we meet in person or online, I aim to offer a space where you feel met with care, honesty and attention.

Sessions, fees and availability

Sessions are 50 minutes and cost £65. I work with adults aged 18 and over.

I offer counselling in person in Brighton, with my practice located next to Preston Park station, as well as online sessions via Google Meet. This allows some flexibility in how we work together, depending on what feels most accessible.

I recognise that cost can sometimes be a barrier. A limited number of concessionary spaces are available and can be discussed on a case-by-case basis.

Getting started

Beginning counselling can feel like a big step, and that’s completely understandable. You don’t need to have everything worked out before getting in touch.

If you’d like to find out more or talk about how we might work together, I offer a free 15-minute introductory call.

Common Questions

Do I need to know what to say before starting counselling?

No. Many people come unsure of where to begin. Part of the process is finding the words together, without pressure to explain everything straight away.

What is counselling with you like?

Sessions are a space to talk about what is going on for you. There is no set agenda. We work at your pace, focusing on what feels most important and making sense of things together over time.

How do I know if counselling is right for me?

If something doesn’t feel right, or you find yourself going over the same thoughts or feelings without clarity, counselling can offer a space to explore that. You don’t need to be in crisis to begin.

Do you offer advice or tell me what to do?

No. My role is not to give advice, but to help you understand what is going on for you. From there, you are better able to decide what feels right.

How many sessions will I need?

There isn’t a fixed number. Some people come for a short period, while others choose to work longer term. We can think about this together and review it as we go.

What issues do you work with?

I work with a range of experiences, including anxiety, low mood, stress, relationship difficulties, self-esteem and feeling stuck or unsure what to do next. You don’t need to fit into a specific category to begin.
