COUNSELLING IN BRIGHTON AND HOVE

Retirement Isn't Always How We Imagine It

Abstract illustration representing the emotional transition into retirement and uncertainty about what comes next.

Retirement is often described as something to look forward to. More time, fewer responsibilities and the freedom to enjoy life at your own pace.

For many people, the reality is more complicated.

Work provides more than an income. It gives structure, purpose, routine and a sense of identity. When that changes, it can leave you feeling unsettled in ways you never expected. You may find yourself wondering what comes next, feeling disconnected from the life you once knew or questioning where you fit now.

If retirement has not felt how you imagined it would, counselling offers a space to explore what this transition means for you.

I provide humanistic counselling in Brighton & Hove for people adjusting to retirement, helping you make sense of this stage of life at your own pace.

Alongside in-person sessions at my Brighton practice, I also offer online counselling across the UK.

Retirement Can Change More Than Your Routine

People often prepare financially for retirement. Fewer people prepare for how it might feel emotionally.

The structure that has shaped your weeks for years suddenly disappears. Daily routines change. Colleagues are no longer part of everyday life. The sense of contributing, being needed or working towards something may begin to fade.

You might have expected retirement to feel like freedom, yet instead find yourself feeling uncertain or restless. Days that once felt full can begin to feel long. Even relationships can change as you and those around you adjust to a different rhythm of life.

For some people, retirement brings relief. For others, it raises questions they have never had time to ask before.

Neither experience is unusual.

What Might Be Going On for You

Perhaps you have found yourself wondering why retirement has been harder than you expected.

You may miss the routine of work or the conversations that came with it. You might feel as though a part of your identity has been left behind, or struggle with the loss of purpose that work once provided.

You may notice yourself feeling less motivated, questioning what to do with your time or becoming more isolated than you anticipated. Sometimes it can be difficult to explain exactly what feels different. There is simply a sense that life no longer feels as familiar.

You might recognise some of these experiences:

Feeling unsure of your purpose since retiring.
Missing the structure and routine that work provided.
Feeling isolated or disconnected from others.
Wondering who you are now that work is no longer central to your life.
Finding it difficult to adjust to this new stage of life.

If this sounds familiar, counselling can offer you the time and space to explore these experiences without judgement.

How Humanistic Counselling Can Help

My approach is based on the belief that retirement is not simply about leaving work. It is a significant life transition that can affect how you see yourself and your place in the world.

Counselling is not about finding quick answers or being told what you should do next. It is a conversation where we take the time to understand what retirement has been like for you and what this stage of life means in the context of your own experiences.

Together we can explore what has changed, what may have been lost and what possibilities are beginning to emerge.

Often, when people are given the opportunity to slow down and make sense of this transition, they begin to discover a renewed sense of direction. Not by replacing their previous life, but by developing a different relationship with this new one.

Counselling can help you:

Adjust to the emotional changes that retirement can bring.
Explore questions around purpose, identity and meaning.
Make sense of feelings of loss or uncertainty.
Build confidence in this new stage of life.
Discover what feels meaningful for you now.

There is no expectation that you already know what retirement should look like. We simply begin with where you are today.
