COUNSELLING IN BRIGHTON AND HOVE

Working with low mood

Counselling for Depression in Brighton

Low mood or depression can be difficult to put into words, even to yourself. It isn’t always intense sadness. At times it can feel like a heaviness, a lack of energy or a sense that things you once cared about no longer feel the same. When this carries on, it can begin to affect how you see yourself and your future. Counselling offers a space to talk things through and begin to understand what’s going on, rather than just trying to push through it.

I offer counselling for depression in Brighton & Hove, providing a calm, non-judgemental space where you can speak openly, at your own pace, with someone who will listen carefully.

Alongside in-person sessions at my Brighton practice, I also offer online counselling, so support is available wherever you are.

If you’d like to find out more or arrange a free 15-minute introductory call, you’re welcome to get in touch by phone or WhatsApp on 07410 040348, via the contact form below or by email at johncreigancounselling@gmail.com.

What Does Low Mood or Depression Feel Like?

Low mood or depression can show up in different ways. It isn’t always obvious. At times, it can feel like a dullness, a lack of energy or a sense that everything takes more effort than it should. Things that once felt natural can start to feel distant, and even small decisions can become tiring.

For some people, it shows up as self-criticism or a mind that keeps returning to the past. For others, it can feel like a kind of fog, difficulty concentrating or feeling slightly removed from what’s going on around you. You might notice low motivation, changes in sleep or appetite, or a heaviness that doesn’t lift with rest.

You may find yourself withdrawing, not because you want to, but because interacting feels more demanding. Or you might continue as normal on the outside while feeling flat or disconnected underneath. Both experiences are common.

If any of this feels familiar, you’re not alone. And you don’t have to hold it on your own either.

How Counselling Can Help with Low Mood and Depression

I offer counselling for low mood and depression in Brighton, working in a way that is collaborative and responsive to you. There are no quick fixes or set approaches. Instead, counselling offers a space to talk things through, make sense of what’s going on and begin to understand what may be contributing to how you are feeling.

Depression can sometimes narrow how things feel, making it harder to see a way forward. Together, we can begin to look at what sits beneath that. The thoughts, feelings and experiences that may be shaping it. As this becomes clearer, it can create space to respond differently, rather than feeling stuck in the same place.

Counselling can help you:

Notice patterns of thought that may be affecting how you feel

Make sense of emotions that feel heavy or difficult to access

Develop a different relationship with self-criticism

Reconnect with a sense of direction, motivation or meaning

There isn’t a single way this process needs to look. This is about your experience,  and whether you want to ease the day-to-day weight, understand yourself more deeply or simply have somewhere you don’t feel under pressure.

In-Person Counselling in Brighton & Online Sessions

I offer counselling for depression in Brighton & Hove, as well as online counselling, so you can choose what feels most comfortable. In-person sessions provide a space away from everyday life where you can reflect more freely. Online sessions can be helpful if you feel more at ease in familiar surroundings, or if you’re based elsewhere in the UK.

Wherever you are, the aim is the same. A calm, supportive space where you can talk things through and make sense of what’s going on.

Taking the First Step

If low mood or depression is affecting your day-to-day life and you would like to talk, you’re welcome to get in touch. You don’t need to have clear answers or a perfect way of explaining how you feel, we can begin with whatever feels most present for you.

Whether you’re in Brighton, Hove or elsewhere, you can arrange an initial session or a free 15-minute call to see whether this feels like the right support for you.

Common questions

Why do I feel low for no clear reason?

Low mood isn’t always linked to one clear cause. It can build over time or sit in the background without being obvious. Counselling can help you explore what may be contributing to it and begin to make sense of how you’re feeling.

Is this depression or just a phase?

It doesn’t always need to be clearly defined. What matters is how you are experiencing it and whether it’s affecting your day-to-day life. Counselling offers a space to look at that more closely, without needing to label it too quickly.

How can counselling help when I feel unmotivated?

When motivation is low, trying to force change can feel exhausting. Counselling helps by understanding what might be sitting underneath that lack of motivation, which can often allow things to begin shifting more naturally.

What if I don’t feel like talking much?

That’s completely okay. You don’t need to come with a lot to say. We can begin slowly, at your pace, and work with whatever feels possible in the moment.
