Support for Depression – You Don’t Have to Go Through This Alone
Depression can feel like a weight that’s hard to describe – or even harder to lift. It can show up slowly, like a fog gradually settling in, or it can hit suddenly, leaving you feeling stuck, disconnected, or overwhelmed. However depression is showing up for you, humanistic counselling offers a safe, supportive space where we can gently explore what’s happening beneath the surface. Without judgement, without pressure, and at your pace.
I offer counselling for depression in Brighton, as well as online counselling for depression. So whether you prefer to meet in person or from the comfort of home, support is available.
What Does Depression Feel Like?
Depression looks and feels different for everyone. For some, it’s a numbness or a heaviness that lingers, a deep sadness that refuses to shift. For others, it’s a sense of being detached from life, as if you’re moving through the days without really being present. Sometimes, it’s all of that at once – and sometimes, there are no words for it at all.
You might notice your mood feels persistently low, or tears come more easily than they used to. Exhaustion can creep in, leaving you drained even after sleep, or you might find rest itself hard to come by. Things that once brought you joy or comfort can feel flat, as if nothing quite reaches you. It might be hard to concentrate, to make even simple decisions, or to hold onto a sense of purpose. For some, depression shows up in feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, or a harsh, critical voice that’s hard to silence. You might start to pull away from people – even the ones you care about most. Not because you want to, but because it feels easier than trying to explain something that’s so difficult to put into words. And often, there’s a sense of emptiness underneath it all. A disconnect from yourself, others, and the world around you.
However depression shows up for you, you don’t have to figure it out alone.
How Humanistic Counselling Can Help with Depression
As a humanistic counsellor based in Brighton, my approach isn’t about fixing you or offering quick solutions. Instead, I offer a space where you can bring all of yourself – the sadness, the frustration, the confusion, even the silence. We can explore it together, with honesty and care.
In humanistic counselling, we go at your pace. There’s no expectation to talk about anything before you’re ready, and no pressure to ‘perform’ or find answers straight away. Sometimes, just having a space where you can stop pretending you’re okay can be a relief in itself. A place where you don’t have to filter or hold back.
Together, we can begin to look at what’s underneath the depression. Exploring the experiences, feelings, or stories that might be shaping how you feel today. We can also pay attention to how you relate to yourself – the ways you speak to yourself, and how that inner dialogue might be fuelling the sense of stuckness or hopelessness. Finding your voice again can be part of the process too. Especially if you’ve felt invisible, unheard, or unable to express what’s really going on for a long time. Alongside all of this, we can gently explore where hope, purpose, and meaning might fit into your life. Even if right now they feel distant or impossible to imagine.
There’s no one right way to work with depression, no set formula or checklist to follow. Every person’s experience is unique, and so the way we work together will be shaped by you – by your story, your needs, and the pace that feels right for you.
