Counselling for Depression in Brighton
Depression can be difficult to explain, even to yourself. It’s not always intense sadness. Often it’s a heaviness, a flatness, or a sense that things you used to care about no longer reach you in the same way. When this carries on, it can begin to shape how you see yourself and your future. Counselling offers a space to slow this down and understand what is happening rather than just pushing through it.
I provide humanistic counselling for depression in Brighton & Hove, offering a safe, non-judgemental place where you can speak openly and at your own pace, with someone who will genuinely listen and take your experience seriously.
Alongside in-person sessions at my Brighton practice, I also offer online counselling for depression, so support is available wherever you are.
To arrange an initial free 15 minute call you can contact me by phone or WhatsApp on 07410 040348, via the contact form below or by email: johncreigancounselling@gmail.com
What Does Depression Feel Like?
Depression can easily go unnoticed. It’s not always tears or obvious distress. Often it’s a dullness, a lack of energy or a sense that everything takes more effort than it should. Things that once felt natural can start to feel distant, and even small decisions can become draining.
For some people it shows up as persistent self-criticism or a mind that keeps returning to the past. For others it is a fog, difficulty concentrating or a feeling of being detached from life as it carries on around you. You might notice low motivation, changes in appetite, disrupted sleep or a heaviness in your body that does not lift with rest.
Many people begin to withdraw, not because they want to, but because interacting feels demanding. Others keep functioning on the outside while privately feeling flat or disconnected. Both experiences are common in depression.
If any of this sounds familiar, you are not alone, and you do not have to hold it by yourself.
How Humanistic Counselling Can Help
As a humanistic counsellor, I do not approach depression as something to be quickly fixed. Instead, counselling becomes a space to understand what your experience is saying about your life, your history and your current pressures.
Depression often narrows a person’s sense of possibility. Together we begin to gently widen that space again. By talking openly, noticing patterns and allowing feelings to be expressed rather than suppressed, people often start to reconnect with parts of themselves that felt unreachable.
Counselling can help you:
Recognise patterns of thought that deepen hopelessness.
Make sense of emotions that feel heavy or shut down.
Reduce self-criticism and develop a more balanced inner voice.
Reconnect with motivation, direction and a sense of meaning.
There is no single route through depression. Counselling adapts to you, whether you want relief from the day-to-day weight, a deeper understanding of yourself or simply somewhere you can be honest without having to keep going for everyone else.
In-Person Counselling in Brighton & Online Sessions
I offer counselling for depression in Brighton & Hove, as well as online counselling for depression, so you can choose what feels most comfortable. Some people value stepping into a separate space dedicated to reflection. Others prefer the familiarity and accessibility of online sessions.
Wherever you are, the aim remains the same: a steady, supportive place where you can speak freely and we can work through what you are experiencing together.
Taking the First Step
If you are living with depression and would like to talk, you are welcome to get in touch. You do not need clear answers or a perfect explanation of how you feel. Beginning the conversation is enough.
Whether you are in Brighton, Hove or elsewhere in the UK, you can contact me to arrange an initial session or a free introductory call and see whether this feels like the right support for you.
