Help with Self-Esteem and Identity

Self-Esteem and Identity Counselling in Brighton & Online

The way you see yourself shapes so much of your life – your relationships, the choices you make and how you move through the world. When self-esteem feels low, or when questions around identity remain unresolved, life can begin to feel like a constant tension between who you are and who you believe you should be.

You might notice patterns of self-doubt, a sense of disconnection from who you are or a persistent feeling of not being “good enough.” These experiences can feel heavy and difficult to shift, and it’s not always easy to know where to start.

Through humanistic counselling for self-esteem and identity you’ll find space to explore these feelings with honesty, curiosity and care. Counselling isn’t about judgement or quick fixes – it’s about making room for your experiences, understanding where they come from and gently finding new ways forward.

I offer self-esteem and identity counselling in Brighton, as well as online counselling sessions for those based elsewhere in the UK. However we work together, my aim is to provide warmth, empathy and a safe, affirming space where you can speak freely and feel truly heard.

What It Feels Like to Struggle with Self-Esteem or Identity

Low self-esteem doesn’t always look the same. For some, it shows up as a loud inner critic – a voice that questions your worth or insists you’re not enough. For others, it’s more subtle – a quiet uncertainty that makes it hard to trust your own judgement or believe in yourself.

You might find yourself comparing your life to others and feeling as though you fall short. Compliments can feel uncomfortable to accept, or you may notice that you’re putting on a role rather than simply being yourself. Self-doubt can become so familiar that it makes decision-making difficult, or leaves you holding back from speaking up or taking opportunities.

Identity can feel just as complex. You may feel disconnected from who you are, unsure of what you truly want, or unclear about your place in the world beyond the expectations of family, culture or past experiences.

Living with these feelings can be draining and isolating. But identity isn’t fixed, and self-worth isn’t something you either have or don’t. Both can be explored, understood, and strengthened in a safe and supportive counselling space.

How Humanistic Counselling Can Help

Humanistic counselling isn’t about changing who you are. It’s about creating a space where you can explore what it means to be you – away from self-doubt, outside expectations, or old narratives that have shaped how you see yourself.

Together, we can look at where those critical voices and feelings of not being enough may have come from. Often, they’re not truths at all, but messages absorbed over time – through childhood, relationships, or wider social pressures. Gently unpacking these experiences can make it easier to see yourself with more clarity and compassion.

Counselling for self-esteem and identity can help you reconnect with your values, needs, and desires, rather than relying on what others say you “should” be. It can also offer space to reflect on identity more broadly – whether that’s about gender, culture, life transitions, or simply the sense of not quite belonging.

The aim of this work isn’t to create a “better” version of you, but to support you in feeling more at home in yourself – more able to trust your own voice and move through life with greater ease and acceptance.
